About me

My name is Spencer and I am an educator, currently working as a Senior Lecturer in Learning and Teaching at a University in the UK.

I have worked for many years as a Lecturer, Teacher Educator, Academic Developer, Programme leader and Mentor in a variety of settings. My primary focus has been working at Higher Education level, however I started my career teaching Further Education students in post 16 Education.

My approach to teaching is focused on creating positive learning environments, both in person and online, that facilitate active learning and the building of collaborative relationships.

I am a keen golfer and strange as it may seem, I see many parallels with golf and teaching! Both have periods where you think you have cracked it, only for it (teaching or golf) to remind you that you never really crack it however long you do it!

Both also involves spinning many different plates, in golf this means trying to ensure your putting, driving, chipping, irons etc are all working well at the same time, whereas teaching is a similar challenge with many moving parts and dynamic variables needed to be controlled and maintained concurrently.

The purpose of this blog is therefore to do my small bit to help fellow educators or anyone for that matter that is looking to support learning, or learn themselves, to be more effective, by sharing my knowledge and understanding of principles and concepts that contribute to effective learning and teaching.

I hope to communicate these ideas in an effective way, and where appropriate provide examples of how to practically apply the concepts outlined.
